UFC 100 Under Card Recap

By now we’ve all heard what happened at UFC 100. Between Lesnar sticking his flag deep into the top of the heavyweight mountain and Hendo’s KO over the talkative Michael Bisping, the whole evening has been well documented. However, for those of you who weren’t lucky enough to attend or couldn’t pony up the $45 needed to order the fight on TV ($55 if you wanted it in High Def), there were some good fights on the under card that haven’t been talked about much. Here’s a quick recap:

First up was Matt Grice vs. Shannon Gugerty. To be honest, I don’t know much about either fighter and still don’t. After a quick takedown and a few punches on their feet, Gugerty put the former Oklahoma State wrestling champion to sleep with a sick guillotine. After two first-round losses in his last two fights, this may be the last time we see Grice in the UFC.

Winner: Gugerty via guillotine.

Next was Tom Lawlor vs. CB “the Doberman” Dollaway. I’ve aways said that Dolloway has one of the best nicknames in MMA. It leads into his last name nicely, is original but not over the top and I like dogs – so that never hurts.

Unfortunately for Dolloway, it takes more than a bad-ass nickname in the UFC. It took Lawlor just 55 seconds to put his fellow TUF alum to sleep with a nasty guillotine. I really hope all you fighters watched the first two fights. It was a clinic on how to avoid guillotine chokes.

Winner: Lawlor via guillotine.

Up next was Dong Hyun-Kim vs. T.J. Grant. Finally! A fight that lasted more than a minute and a half. Kim scored points early with a quick take down. The remainder of the round was a technical battle on the ground with Kim taking the round.

Round two saw Kim land a big left hand early. Kim hopped on Grant and the remainder of the round was fought on the ground. Aside from an accidental kick to the head by Grant, the fight was another technical display.

In the third cemented his win by taking Grant down twice and getting the better of the few stand up moments of the fight. If you like MMA this was a good fight. If you’re a casual fan you probably wanted your money back.

Winner: Kim via unanimous decision

Jim Miller against Mac Danzig was a bloody mess. If you were wondering where all that blood on the octagon floor came from at the beginning of the PPV, this is where it originated.

A good first round saw some action on the ground and on the feet. Miller opens up a cut Danzig’s eye and the rest is history. The octagon looked like a crime scene. I half expected to see Gil Grissom walk in and confiscate Danzig’s shorts to bring them back to the lab. Blood everywhere!

There was a lot of great back and forth action on the ground and standing. However, Miller seemed to have the edge. Maybe because Danzig just couldn’t see with all that blood pouring into his eye.

Winner: Miller via unanimous decision

Jon “Bones” Jones vs. “Irish” Jake O’Brien gets my vote for Best Nickname Fight of the Night. Jones is just an amazing athlete. If you haven’t seen him fight yet, I implore you to do so. Between his crazy video game moves and hyper-active style you’re sure to get a great show.

Lucky for you, you will probably be seeing more of Jones soon. After a nice first round, Jones finished off O’Brien via D’Arce choke in the second. This win should get Jones a fight with some higher caliber opponents.

Winner: Jones via D’Arce choke.

In the last fight on the under card, we were treated to seeing the Godfather of Ground ‘N Pound, Mark Coleman vs. Ultimate Fighter runner-up, Stephan Bonnar. Bonnar really needed this win to move forward with his career in the UFC. Coleman really needed this win to prove old guys can still fight.

After two pretty good first rounds, Coleman takes Bonnar down in the third a couple of times and does a little bit more to secure the victory. It’s official: Old dudes CAN kick ass.

Winner: Coleman via unanimous decision
