Recap of The Simpsons' MMA episode

The Simpsons mma septagon

In the past couple of years much debate has been made over Mixed Martial Arts. For some it’s too bloody. Others want to see it get back to its no holds barred roots. Some say it’s bad for kids. Others say it’s the ultimate test of skill and bravery. One thing’s for sure: There certainly hasn’t been a shortage of opinions on the subject.

Last night, a family from the fictional town of Springfield was able to show all sides of the debate and actually make some sense of it all. Whether it’s something as serious as illegal immigration or something as silly as the debate over MMA, The Simpsons have never shied away from controversy and always manage to show both sides.

After catching a night of MMA action at the UPKCC (Ultimate Punch, Kick and Choke Championship) with Homer, Bart and his friends start their own “friendly” cage fighting league. Upon seeing Bart doing his best Ultimate Fighter impression, Marge is horrified and vows to put an end to the sport in Springfield. (Much to the chagrin of Bart and Homer.)

"Call me a killjoy, but just because something isn't to my taste, I don't think anyone should be able to enjoy it," proclaims Marge.

After storming the “septagon” at the next UPKCC event, Marge is challenged to a fight by the league’s owner, Chet Engelbret. As the league’s founder, Chet is referred to as “the public face of the sport,” much like Dana White and the UFC.

Clearly the Simpsons’ writers have done their homework. Between the Dana White reference, a Chuck Liddell cameo and some cool jiu-jitsu moves, Marge, Bart, Homer and even Lisa displayed a lot of MMA knowledge.

I won’t ruin it all for those who have yet to see the episode, but the end sees Marge put Chet in a vicious Arm Lock and Lisa flooring Bart with a superman punch inside the “septagon”.

All in all it was yet another great episode of The Simpsons featuring some funny MMA jokes and great UFC Fighting action. Check it out online if you didn’t get a chance to see it on Sunday.
