Don't forget the Homeless World Cup.

2008 Team Afghanistan Homeless World Cup Champions

As you may know, the World Cup kicked off yesterday in South Africa.

Held every four years, the World Cup is unquestionably the biggest sporting event in the world. Rabid football fans from every continent descend on one lucky country while the world’s best players try and win glory for their respective nations.

However, there is another World Cup few people know about. The Homeless World Cup is an international football tournament, where teams made up entirely of homeless people compete for their nations. It's been held annually since 2003.

The event brings hope and joy to homeless football fans from all over the world. In fact, the 2008 title was won by Team Afghanistan. Players whose homes and families had been destroyed and torn apart by years of warfare finally had a reason to celebrate. Wining the title meant more to these Afghan men than most people could possibly imagine.

So while watching the World Cup this summer, don’t forget about the world’s homeless football fans. After all, they are truly BORN STRONGER.
