Part 23 of our amateur MMA interview series.

A few days back we had a conversation with Liam Corrigan about what it takes to be a MMA fighter. He was kind enough to give us a few minutes of his time and answer all our questions. Thanks a bunch, Liam!

Q: What is your current record? Any fights coming up soon?

I am 1-0 as semi pro and 6-0 amateur. I've finished all my fights so far in the first round. I have a fight coming up against Paul Jones at Fight UK 4 on 5th June so starting camp for that very shortly.

Q: At what point in your life did you realize you wanted to become a competitive Mixed Martial Artist?

I started training a lot of No-Gi with Nathan Leverton at Leicester shootfighters. After entering a lot of grappling competitions MMA competitions followed and then fighting on shows, so it was a natural progression.

Q: Have there been any challenges in your life that you’ve had to overcome in order to get where you are today?

Yeah I have a job! Working then training afterwards is tough but a lot of fighters are doing the same thing and I think its where you find out who really wants it and who can handle all the long days and feeling knackered all week. It builds character though.

Q: Is there a current MMA star you like to pattern yourself after?

I used to love the Tito Ortiz of old. I like the idea of dominating your opponent mentally and making them quit before you even really start hurting them. I want all my opponents to know they've been in a fight with me. I like most the old school guys like Tank Abbot, Frank Mir and Royce. Thanks to Tank I know how important having cardio to take you past at least a round is. I also like Jon Jones, GSP and all the well-rounded guys that make exciting fights. Being exciting is important. I’m always looking to finish.

Q: Where do you train? Care to make a shout out to any of your instructors or training partners?

I train at Leicester Shootfighters and wanna’ just say “big thanks” to Nathan Leverton, Rob Hannis and everyone who helps me and all the other fighters get ready.

Q: Has your fighting style evolved since you began training or have you stuck with a specific style throughout?

My style is that I wanna’ outwork everyone that I ever face. Regardless of where the fight goes I wanna’ beat you at that aspect. Simple as that really.

Q: Is there any particular training you spend more time on? Cardio? Strength training?

I spend time on every aspect. Nothing is left to chance. I’m at a great gym where I get everything I need from striking to grappling to fitness. I’m really into the mental side of fighting, which I think gives you the biggest edge of all.

Q: Is there anyone you would like to thank for helping you get to where you are?

There are loads. Nathan Leverton, Rob Hannis, Ranjeet 'Suave' Baria, JD Hylton, Jimmy Wallhead, Paul Barton and everyone at LSF that helps me train and prep for comps and fights as well as all my family and friends that support me at events. Hazel, Dom, Head, Kuge, my big cousin Matt and my number one fan Mark Crofts.

Q: What advice would you give to other people looking to get into MMA, or any competitive sport, for that matter?

Train regularly. A lot of guys think they wanna’ fight then realize the commitment you have to put in. If it’s something your passionate about, get to a good gym and train as much as your girlfriend lets you :-)
