Our guest blogger details his journey from self-described "geek" to amateur MMA. This week's guest blogger is Jimmy Vo. Jimmy is an amateur MMA fighter from South Jersey. Take a look at his story and feel free to submit your own!
My Childhood
Most of my life was spent behind a computer. Kids played sports, I learned about the interworking of technology. I believe I was given more brains than athletic ability. This was evident when I was forced to play little league. I played outfield, where they put the kids that weren’t very good. I played one season and hated it. I didn’t have the talent for it.
Life goes on, I stuck with what I was good at. Being a geek. I had bad asthma all my life, which attributed my lack of athleticism. I ran the slowest mile consecutively every year in my grade school days. I scored poorly on the fitness tests.
MMA Training
Fast forward to my college years. I grew tired of being out of shape. I gave weightlifting a try but was tired of the traditional 4-day split. I decided to take up Mixed Martial Arts because I thought it would be a great challenge. Like anyone else, I nearly died every night at the beginning but I stuck with it. I stayed consistent and found myself running three miles instead of struggling to do one mile.
My First Fight
Almost 3 years of training, after saying I’d never fight I had a change of heart. I wanted to test myself in the cage. I decided I wanted to fight in August, so I was able to get on the card. During the summer while all of my friends were having fun, I spent 6 days a week training. Three of them were two-a-days. I put in a tremendous amount of time and effort preparing for the fight.
Fight day came and went. I lost in the second round by submission. My performance wasn’t very impressive. Regardless of the fight details, I felt accomplished. I trained hard (never thought I’d survive training) and I fought. These were two personal victories for me.
